Hammers victory chances go for a Burton

29 July 2010

Burton Albion 4 West Ham X1 2

A WEST HAM team fielding four scholars and five young professionals finally ran out of steam against an experienced Burton side, but they will have learned a lot from their efforts.

Drawing 2-2 at the break, West Ham had to deal with seven fresh Burton players in the second half, and in the end they didn't quite have enough to hold on.

Ahmed Abdulla had given the Hammers an early lead at the Pirelli Stadium, and though Burton hit back hard to take the lead, American trialist Devann Yeo equalised right on half time.

The New Yorker caught the eye, while there were also good performances from midfielders George Moncur and Olly Lee as well as wing-backs Filip Modelski and Jordan Brown.

Reserve team boss Alex Dyer was pleased: "The most important thing is that they have to show that they can play at Football League level," he said. "Next year, or even sooner, these boys will want to go out on loan to places like Burton.
