A group of Tower Hamlets College students did the rounds at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel last week.

The 12 applied science students took a tour of the £58million five-storey Pathology and Pharmacy building that was opened in 2006.

Hospital staff took them through the microbiology, virology, haematology and histology departments and the budding scientists learnt techniques such as how to spot cancerous cells.

Mohammed Ahmed, 17, said: "I would like to go to university and study microbiology and not many people get to experience a tour like that.

"It was great to get some background information on exactly what people do in different departments.

"My favourite part was the virology department but the whole afternoon was really practical and built on what we learn in class.
