New fire station to meet modern service

30 June 2009
SHADWELL Fire Station is set to be entirely rebuilt after the Government gave the green light for a huge building programme to go ahead.

The existing station, which is over 70 years old, will be replaced with a new building on the same site.

It will have the potential to house two fire engines and there will be space for firefighters to work with young people and will also feature an area where crew members can meet people and pass on safety advice that could save lives.

The station will be rebuilt under the Private Finance Initiative project will see London Fire Brigade receive £57.4 million to make major improvements to nine of its stations.

Brigade Borough Commander Bruce Epsly said: "The existing station has served the community well for many years but the fire service has changed and so have the facilities we need.
