Abseil to show she is rock for school's help scheme

17 August 2009
DARE-DEVIL Ruth Flanagan, from Bethnal Green, is set to take on a daring stunt to support needy refugee school children in Thailand.

She will abseil down a 70ft rock face in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, on September 5.

Ruth, a Schools' Liaison Officer for the Thai Children's Trust, hopes to raise her £800 target to help the Hsa Thoo Lei Learning Centre in Mae Sot, on Thailand's western border with Burma.

The centre provides a free education for 700 children and is home to about 200 children, many of them orphans or whose parents.

With more fleeing Burma the school is overwhelmed and has had to cancel free meals

Because they can't afford the £35-a-day costs.

Nine of Ruth's friends will join her in the abseil.

Anyone interested in supporting her should visit her sponsorship page at http://www.justgiving.com/Ruth-Flanagan/
