Seconds out: Boxing comes to college

16 February 2010
Students at Tower Hamlets College will soon be shaping up to deliver a knock-out blow after it was awarded £750 worth of funding to set up a boxing club.

Money will go towards the purchase of machines, new equipment and training sessions.

Two time Commonwealth Games Light Flyweight silver medallist Darran Langley will visit to pass on tips and select students to visit his gym to see how the professionals train and prepare.

All has been arranged by the Moving Generations scheme, a project set up by the Youth Sport Trust in association with Deutsche Bank to use sport to reach 'at risk' young Londoners in some of the capital's most deprived areas.

The College has an additional grant of £225 towards funding a Sports Leadership qualification.

College sports co-ordinator Daniel Searle said of the "great" opportunity for students to learn more about a "terrific sport," that boxing is all about dedication, determination and resilience, skills the students will need for the rest of their lives.
