Road death: Girl victim named

12 February 2010
A 19-year-old girl killed early on Sunday while crossing Bow Road has been named as Swedish student Emma Mathilda Karlsson.

She was local, residing in Rainhill Way, and died of multiple injuries after coming in to collision with a blue BMW 330 saloon travelling west.

It was around 2.25am that tragedy struck as she was crossing the Pelican crossing on the A11 close to the junction with Campbell Road E3.

The London Ambulance Service and air ambulance attended, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned at Poplar Coroner's Court.

Ms Karlsson was in London to study English at a college in Kensington, and had recently completed her studies. She was due to return to Sweden and had booked a flight for March 1.

The BMW driver stopped at the scene and was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is bailed to return in late June pending further inquiries.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone with information regarding events surrounding this incident, to contact them at the Collision Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garage on (020) 8597 4874.
