Orbit has backing

28 July 2010
HE iconic, yet controversial, Orbit tower suggested for the Olympic site at Stratford has won Newham Council's support.

And in backing the 114-metre high ArcelorMittal sculpture - dubbed the corkscrew - the Town Hall's executive lead on the Olympics, Cllr Paul Brickell, described the tubular steel artwork with a surrounding walkway as a fitting landmark and potential crowd-pleaser.

The structure would include two viewing platforms, offering breathtaking views across the Olympic Park. Final decision on whether the Orbit should be erected lies with planning bosses the Olympic Delivery Authority.
